Pyrethroid Insecticides for Ultra Low Volume (ULV) Application

Mosquito abatement applications are made through special Ultra Low Volume (ULV), cold aerosol generating equipment.  This ULV equipment breaks the water or oil-based liquid pyrethrin formulation into tiny particles to reduce the amount of insecticide needed to be applied to less than one fluid ounce of insecticide spray per acre.  Essentially, the one fluid ounce per acre rate is equivalent to about a thimble full of insecticide per acre for effective mosquito control!

The highest standard of efficiency and optimum coverage of the pyrethrin formulation is achieved using the ULV spray equipment. Ultimately, this application allows for the highest level of control of adult mosquitoes while, at the same time, creating the lowest level of insecticide exposure to the environment and non-target animal species.           

Pyrethrioids are often synergized with piperonyl butoxide for two primary reasons.  One, piperonyl butoxide enhances the effectiveness of pyrethrins allowing for an overall lower application rate. This is particularly important when the application is made outdoors on a broad scale.  The second purpose is to prevent the target insect from becoming immune or resistant to the pyrethrins.  Piperonyl butoxide works to block different biochemical pathways in insects and overwhelm the insect’s ability to detoxify the pyrethrins.  It is because of this reason why less pyrethrin is needed when piperonyl butoxide is added to the formulation opposed to if pyrethrins were used alone and without piperonyl butoxide
